1954 | 2008 (1988) | Isaac Asimov | Franchise | Multivac decides all votes by conducting a 3-hour interview with a "representative" citizen (the Voter) once a year. The story is set in 2008, but it refers to the "goddam MacComber vote" of 1988, so obviously the system must have been established by then. In 1952, a UNIVAC had been used to predict Eisenhower's landslide victory after counting just 3 million votes. . Asimov extrapolated this success (probably repeated in the congress elections of 1954, since Asimov wrote the story after those) to a ridiculous level. |
